SUBARU's Approach in Crashworthiness CAE

| SUBARU has introduced computer analysis technology of crashworthiness from
the development of 3rd generation Legacy. Authors will report various CAE
approaches in the development of 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation Legacy.In
the development of cars, CAE engineers constantly face following requirements:
(1) to improve accuracy of analysis, (2) to cope with new crashworthiness
items, (3) to speed up analysis for shorter development period. These requirements
reflect increasing market demand for better crashworthiness. In addition,
SUBARU's target for the world's leading impact safety performance needs
higher accuracy analysis. |

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Fracture in Aluminum

| To assess the problem of containment after a blade-off accident in an aero-engine
by numerical simulation the FAA has instigated a research effort concerning
failure prediction in a number of relevant materials. Aluminium kicked
off the program which involved an intensive testing program providing failure
data under different states of stress, different strain rates and different
temperatures. In particular split Hopkinson bars were used to perform dynamic
punch tests on plates of different thicknesses allowing to investigate
the transition between different failure modes such as petaling and plugging.
Ballistic impact tests were performed at NASA GRC for the purpose of validation.
This paper focuses on the numerical simulation effort and a comparison
with experimental data is done. The simulations were performed with LS-DYNA
and a tabulated version of the Johnson-Cook material law was developed
in order to increase the generality, flexibility and user-friendliness
of the material model. |

A study of simulation taking thermoplastic properties into consideration
with MAT_SAMP-1.

| MAT_SAMP-1 is a material model introduced in the release of LS-DYNA Ver.971,
and various properties of thermoplastic substances can be taken into consideration
in analyses with the model. Therefore we can obtain more accurate results
from CAE calculations for plastic products with the constitutive model
by considering/simulating phenomena, which are not identified in metals,
such as not only pressure dependent yield surface defined by tensile/compression/shear
stress - strain data but also non-isochoric behavior during plastic deformation,
a damage effect and stiffness decreasing due to the effect. In this session,
we report analysis results to investigate the function of MAT_SAMP-1 and
show the availability of this material model. |

Novel HPC Technologies for Scalable CAE: The Case for Parallel I/O and File Systems

CAE parallel efficiency and job turn-around times continue to be important factors behind engineering and scientific decisions to develop models at higher fidelity. As HPC continues an aggressive expansion of Linux clusters based on multi-core processor architectures, expectations grow for large-scale clusters to meet the I/O demands of increasing fidelity in CAE modeling and workflow data management. The deployment of network attached storage (NAS) offers several advantages of shared storage and ease-in-management, but their legacy NFS file systems are serial, and limit the overall scalability of parallel CAE applications with I/O requirements.
Entirely new storage system and software architectures have been introduced that combine key advantages of legacy shared storage, yet eliminate the drawbacks that have made them unsuitable for large distributed cluster deployments. This new class of parallel file systems and shared storage architectures was developed for parallel I/O to enable overall scalability of parallel CAE simulations. This lecture will examine the CAE motivation for parallel file systems and storage, and the I/O requirements for multi-physics LS-DYNA applications on production-level Linux clusters with proper balance for I/O and data management. |

"Manufacturing" From customers' point of view utilizing CAE

| Lion Co.has been examining ways to design containers utilizing CAE since
1980s. Now, CAE is used as "Visualization of the phenomenon"
and "Validating ideas". Last year, CAE information management
tool "CAESAR" was developed and introduced to make CAE operations
efficiently. As a result, it was possible to run ALD(Analysis Leads Design)
conception. Also, I will mention about the effects to the design team when
CAE and industrial design is combined. |

Dynamic analysis of front fork for motorcycle by LS-DYNA

The virtual testing model of the real structure corresponding that was
able to consider the elastic deformation of the front fork and the tire,
was constructed with LS-DYNA.The response evaluation of the front fork
including the behavior of the tire was enabled by this analysis. |

Multi-Objective Design Exploration of Automotive Tires Using Self-Organizing Map

| Since tires carry out many functions and many of them have tradeoffs, it
is important to find the best combination of design variables so-called
sweet spot and/or to obtain design knowledge which is the relationship
among design variables and Pareto solutions. In this presentation, a multi-objective
design exploration by means of multi-objective optimization and data mining
techniques for example self-organizing map is introduced and applied it
to the tire design problem to improve wear performances. The wear performance
is evaluated by LS-DYNA, and multi-objective genetic algorithm is used
to find Pareto solutions. We also would like to talk about the outlook
of design exploration using data mining techniques. |

Development of a Flex-PLI LS-DYNA Model

| A biofidelic flexible pedestrian legform impactor (Flex-PLI) has been developed
by Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) and Japan Automobile
Research Institute (JARI). The Flex-PLI has good biofidelity as well as
several knee ligament elongation measurement capabilities, three femur
and four tibia bending moment measurement capabilities. This paper introduces
a finite element model of the Flex-PLI type GT for LS-DYNA. The Flex-PLI
type GT LS-DYNA model was carefully created to ensure every important detail
was included. Geometries, masses and material properties of all parts were
reproduced from drawings and inspection of the real components. Connectivity
and component interaction within the model was determined by thorough experiments.
Accurate prediction of injury indices and kinematic behaviour was achieved
by correlation to static and dynamic calibration tests. A fine mesh was
used but reasonable calculation cost assured by imposing an analysis time
step of 0.9 micro seconds. |

A simulation for fracture prediction of polymeric product based on damage

| A simulation for fracture prediction of polymeric products is lately recognized
as one of the most important industrial themes. To cope with this demand,
a simulation using the material model for polymers is recently investigated
in Asahi-Kasei Group. In this presentation, an impact fracture of polymeric
product is predicted in LS-DYNA by using the material model with damage
peculiar to polymer. The present material model developed by Asahi-Kasei
is installed in LS-DYNA through the user subroutine. Moreover, a simulation
with SAMP-1 is also performed. The validity for simulations with these
two material models is evaluated by comparing the numerical results with
an experimental result. |

Development of stamping technology for high tensile strength steel plates using CAE

| The increased use of high tensile strength steel is required to ensure
vehicle structural rigidity to meet collision safety standards as well
as to reduce vehicle weight. High tensile strength steel is known for its
wide elastic range and its variation in material properties, therefore,
robust forming technique is necessary. We report our research on robust
forming of high tensile strength steel using CAE, aimed for mass production. |
